The game's standout feature is its roster of monstrous, thematic fighters: a fire-breathing Tyrannosaurus (Blizzard), a two-headed ice serpent (Vertigo), a lava-spewing ape (Armadon), a lightning-charged raptor (Diablo), a corrosive acid-spitting gorilla (Chaos), a rock-hurling ape (Sauron), and a chameleonic pterosaur (Talain). Each represents an elemental force and has a unique, inhuman fighting style.
Beyond standard fighting game mechanics, Primal Rage included 'Fatalities'-style finishing moves called 'Uber Victories', stage transitions that could knock opponents into different arenas, and the controversial 'Human Sacrifice' system where winners could devour tiny human sprites for health, which contributed to its notoriety and censorship in some regions.
While the PlayStation port had some graphical and frame rate compromises compared to the arcade original, it was a faithful translation that brought the game's visceral, chaotic, and distinctly '90s brand of extreme arcade combat into homes, securing its status as a cult classic of the era.
