Makai Toushi SaGa is a remake of the first game in the SaGa series, originally released on the Game Boy in 1989. Makai Toushi SaGa (literally 'Demon World Tower Saga') follows a party of adventurers as they attempt to scale a mysterious tower at the center of the world, rumored to lead to Paradise. Their journey takes them through four distinct worlds: the World of Continent, the World of Ocean, the World of Sky, and the World of Ruins, each with its own unique environments and challenges.
The game features three character classes with radically different progression systems: Humans who grow by purchasing stat-boosting items, Mutants who randomly gain new abilities and stats after battles, and Monsters who transform by consuming meat dropped by defeated enemies. This innovative approach to character development was groundbreaking for its time and remains a defining feature of the SaGa series.
The WonderSwan Color remake introduced significant enhancements including fully colored graphics drawn by Toshiyuki Itahana, animated opening and ending sequences, a bestiary to track encountered enemies, and the ability to re-target attacks when an enemy is defeated mid-turn. These improvements modernized the classic while preserving its challenging, experimental spirit that has influenced games like the Pokémon franchise.
