Scenario 1 follows Synbios of the Republic, Scenario 2 focuses on Medion of the Empire, and Scenario 3 (Japan-exclusive) concludes the story with Julian's perspective. The games feature an innovative 'perspective system' where choices in one scenario affect events in others.
The battle system combines grid-based tactical combat with traditional RPG elements. Players command a force of up to 12 characters in isometric battles, utilizing terrain advantages, character classes, and special abilities. The game introduces new mechanics like height advantages, weapon durability, and friendship systems that affect combat performance.
Despite only Scenario 1 being officially localized, Shining Force III has gained a cult following for its ambitious storytelling and refined gameplay. The Saturn's hardware capabilities allowed for detailed 3D battlefields, animated spell effects, and a sweeping orchestral soundtrack that elevated the series to new heights.
