The game's core appeal lies in its staggering roster size for the era, bringing together the entire lineage of warriors from the first three games. This included previously boss-exclusive characters like Goro, Kintaro, and Shao Kahn as playable fighters, alongside hidden gems like Chameleon and classic versions of Scorpion and Sub-Zero.
Gameplay was refined from Ultimate MK3 with the addition of the 'Aggressor' bar, which filled as players landed hits, enabling powerful 'Aggressor' combos when full. Other new features included 'Run' buttons, enhanced air combat, and alternate costumes, making it the most feature-rich 2D Mortal Kombat of its time.
While the PlayStation port had noticeable load times and some graphical cutbacks compared to the arcade, it became the most accessible and complete home version for millions of fans, cementing its status as a beloved, chaotic, and content-packed fighting game classic.
