About This Retro Game
Originally conceived as a proposal for Final Fantasy VII, Xenogears was directed by Tetsuya Takahashi with Yasunori Mitsuda composing the acclaimed soundtrack. The story spans over 10,000 years, incorporating elements from Jungian psychology, Gnosticism, and Nietzschean philosophy.
The innovative battle system features two distinct combat modes: hand-to-hand martial arts combat using combo attacks and deathblow techniques, and strategic mech (Gear) battles with fuel management and special attacks.
Despite development constraints that led to the controversial second disc being presented largely through narration and still images, Xenogears has achieved cult classic status and is widely regarded as one of the most ambitious and thought-provoking RPGs ever created.
The game's influence spawned the entire Xeno series franchise and continues to be celebrated for its mature storytelling, complex character development, and philosophical depth that was unprecedented in video games at the time.
