About This Retro Game

Development of Dinosaur Planet began in the late 1990s as Rare's ambitious swan song for the Nintendo 64. The team aimed to create an epic Zelda-like adventure with fully voiced characters, dynamic weather systems, and a sprawling world divided into distinct biomes, all running on the aging N64 hardware.

The game was initially planned to feature two playable characters, Sabre and Krystal, each with their own unique abilities and story paths. Their quests would intertwine as they sought to recover the stolen SpellStones and stop the evil General Scales from harnessing the power of the Krazoa Spirits.

In 2000, Nintendo requested that Rare rebrand the game as a Star Fox title to bolster the franchise's presence. The protagonist Sabre was redesigned to resemble Fox McCloud, and the gameplay was adjusted to include Arwing flight sections. Despite being nearly complete, the game was cancelled for N64 and reworked for the GameCube, eventually releasing as Star Fox Adventures in 2002.

The leaked N64 prototype became a legendary piece of gaming history, sparking extensive fan documentation, preservation efforts, and even fan-made patches to restore cut content and polish the unreleased build.
