Resident Evil 0 Demake

Resident Evil 0 originally began development as a Nintendo 64 title before being canceled and later released on the GameCube in 2002. This fan-made demake represents a fascinating "what if" scenario: what if Capcom had instead brought the game to Sony's PlayStation after the success of Resident Evil 2 and 3? The project is built as a mod of the original Resident Evil 2, leveraging its engine to recreate the environment, enemies, and mechanics of RE0 within the technical constraints of the 32-bit era.

The demake demo covers the entirety of the train section—the Ecliptic Express—which comprises roughly the first third of the original game. Players control both S.T.A.R.S. medic Rebecca Chambers and escaped convict Billy Coen, with the ability to swap between them on the fly. Each character maintains their own separate inventory, and the follow mechanic cleverly adapts the system from RE2 when Ada accompanies Leon, significantly expanded to allow full cooperative puzzle-solving. The demo includes all encounters, events, puzzles, and even a special addition during the train's countdown sequence if Rebecca remains in the control room.

The attention to detail is remarkable: full FMVs have been ported, the original GameCube backgrounds have been adapted for PlayStation's lower specs (with expected quality loss), and door transitions properly reflect which door the player is opening. Custom models and textures for zombies pay homage to the canceled N64 version, while new models for Rebecca, Billy, and RE0-exclusive creatures—including the Stinger boss—demonstrate the modders' dedication. The iconic Mimicry Marcus enemies, which keep players constantly on edge, have also been faithfully recreated.

Released as a demo in June 2023, the Resident Evil 0 Demake represents a true labor of love from the fan community. It offers a glimpse into an alternate timeline where classic Resident Evil continued on the PlayStation beyond Nemesis, preserving the series' original survival horror formula while exploring the unique mechanics of its prequel. Though only the train section is currently playable, the project stands as a testament to the enduring appeal of PS1-era Resident Evil and the creativity of its dedicated fanbase.
